North Queensland Rifle Association

The first meeting of the North Queensland Rifle Association was commenced yesterday, at the Rifle Range, on Boss Island, and will be concluded today. The liberal prizes offered by the Association had the effect of securing a large number of entries for the different events, and the meeting bids fair to terminate most successfully. At about a quarter past nine, Colonel French, in opening the meeting, gave an introductory speech, declaring the Range open. In course of his remarks he said that should there be any little shortcomings in the management, he trusted they would be overlooked by the competitor, as this was the first attempt of the Association at anything of the kind. Everything, how-ever, as far as he knew, had been done to make the meeting go off as well as possible, and he trusted it would only be the first of a series of successful gatherings of the same nature.

It will be seen that yesterday Charters Towers were most decidedly on top, and it will also be seen that Colonel French himself shot remarkably well. The most interesting feature of the to-day's shooting will be the Teams Match, for which there will be seven teams competing.

North Queensland Rifle Association

The North Queensland Rifle Association closed their inaugural (two days') meeting yesterday at about 5 p.m. As will be seen from the shooting, the majority of the matches were closely contested. The competitors, on the whole, have gone away satisfied with the meeting. Charters Towers men are to be complimented on their winnings, as they have taken away the two most important events - viz., they Queens's prize and the Scott, Dawson, and Stewart Trophy ( for teams) - also the majority of the money prizes. They deserve very great credit for the manner in which they held their reputation, especially on a new range to them.

Ravenswood's pluckly little band is deserving of some praise for the way they fought for their prestige, J. Colledge, of their company, proving himself to be a very reliable and consistent shot. Mackay's representatives - men worthy their steel have done fairly well on the whole. The proof of their consistency is the fact of two of them - W. L. Grant and J. Walker - carrying off the first and second prizes in the champion aggregate. Lastly, as to our local marksmen, with a few exceptions, they shot poorly. A. M. Piegrome's shooting in the Ladies' Bracelet is the best record of the meeting at 500yds., viz, 34 out of a possible 35. At the termination of the shooting Colonel French called on the winning team of Scott, Dawson, and Stewart's trophy, to step to the front, and handed it to their caption (H. B. Walker) the cup, stating that it gave him great pleasure to be present to hand over this in the winners, and expressed him satisfaction at the manner in which everything had been gone through; it was very pleasing to him to have such a good turn out of competitors especially as only a few years back rifle shooting in the North was at a very low ebb. The meeting altogether, had been a great success, and has passed off in a highly satisfactory manner.
